Why do EVs need specific winter tires?
EVs differ from gas cars in three ways that matter for tires:
- Weight: the battery makes EVs 450–1,300 lbs heavier than comparable gas cars. Winter tires need a higher load rating to handle that.
- Instant torque: electric drivetrains deliver 100% torque from a standstill, putting significantly more strain on tires when accelerating on snow or ice.
- Rolling resistance and range: cold weather already cuts battery capacity by 20–35% in winter. A low-rolling-resistance tire helps limit that additional range loss.
Standard winter tires built for gas cars often work, but aren't optimal. Tires marked with an EV, Elect, or a spiral symbol are specifically engineered for these requirements.
What does the EV symbol on winter tires mean?

The EV symbol (or the spiral symbol ⊕) on a tire indicates:
- Reinforced sidewalls for the higher vehicle weight
- Optimized rolling resistance for better efficiency and range

Winter tires and range: how much do you lose?

In winter, an EV loses range for two reasons: a cold battery and the higher rolling resistance of winter tires. Combined, that means:
- Summer driving (68°F): 100% of range
- Winter tires at 32°F: roughly 70–80% of range (battery plus rolling resistance)
- Winter tires at 14°F: roughly 55–65% of range (heating, cold, and tires combined)
An EV-optimized winter tire can recover 3–8% of range compared to a standard winter tire, which on a 190-mile WLTP-rated car works out to 6–15 extra miles.
When do you need to switch to winter tires?
Germany has no fixed calendar-based winter tire law, but a conditions-based requirement: whenever there's snow, ice, or slippery conditions, winter tires (marked M+S or with the snowflake symbol) must be fitted, or you risk a fine of €60–120 and a point on your license. On top of that, an accident without appropriate tires can lead your insurer to reduce or deny liability coverage proportionally.
Rule of thumb: October through Easter, or whenever daytime temperatures consistently drop below 45°F.

Many EV drivers buy a second set of wheels for winter tires, often steel wheels (cheaper, more durable in winter conditions). A few things to keep in mind:

- Seasonal tire storage at a shop costs €50–100 per swap
