Why we built ChargeMap24
ChargeMap24 grew out of a simple problem: EV drivers on the road quickly lose track of what's available. Too many apps, too many networks, not enough clarity, especially on routes you don't drive every day. Our team spent months building a solution: a single, independent platform with no ads and no network bias.
The result: ChargeMap24 – and the interactive map is the core of the platform. Over 150,000 charge points across Europe and beyond, with tens of thousands more added regularly.
The technology behind the map
The map runs on Leaflet.js with CartoDB tiles as the base layer. Leaflet is lightweight, open source, and works on every device, from phones to desktops. No Google Maps, no expensive API limits, no tracking dependency.
Charging data comes from the OpenChargeMap database, one of the largest open data sources for charging infrastructure worldwide. We sync that data into our own database regularly, normalize it, and enrich it with our own metadata like operator info, network logos, and regional filters.

How the data stays current
The biggest challenge with any charging map is keeping it accurate. Stations get added, go offline, or change operators. We built an automated sync process that reconciles OpenChargeMap data against our own database on a regular schedule.
A background job also flags status changes and marks outdated entries. Long-term, we want to let users report errors directly too, similar to how OpenStreetMap works.

Why we're staying independent and open
ChargeMap24 isn't meant to be another glossy network-branded portal. There are enough platforms out there primarily marketing their own charge points. We're aiming for the opposite: a neutral, clear, low-ad information source.
In practice, that means: no sponsored placements on the map, no push marketing for specific networks, and no hidden affiliate links buried in station info.
What's coming next
The map is the core, but ChargeMap24 is meant to be more than a cloud of dots on a base layer. Coming in the months ahead:
- City pages: a dedicated page for every major city with local tips, statistics, and an embedded map
- Regional overview pages: broader summaries with density breakdowns
- An expanded guide section: independent guides on charging cards, home chargers, incentives and more
- Connector pages: explanations of every connector type with matching vehicle info
