CHAdeMO is a Japanese DC fast-charging standard used mainly by Nissan and Mitsubishi. It is being phased out in Europe in favour of CCS.

CHAdeMO (Charge de Move) was developed in 2010 by a Japanese consortium (Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Fuji Heavy). The large round connector with two DC contacts was for a long time the second DC standard alongside CCS in Europe.

Status in Europe 2026

CHAdeMO is rapidly losing ground. New vehicles from European and Korean brands use CCS exclusively. Nissan itself switched to CCS with the Ariya. Many older CHAdeMO chargers are not being replaced.

For CHAdeMO drivers

Nissan Leaf drivers should use the connector filter on the charging map to find CHAdeMO-compatible stations — availability is shrinking.

Compatible Vehicles

Nissan Leaf (Gen 1+2), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, older Kia Soul EV

FAQ: CHAdeMO

What is CHAdeMO?
CHAdeMO is a Japanese DC fast-charging standard developed in 2010 by Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi. The large round connector supports up to 150 kW DC. In Europe, CHAdeMO is being replaced by CCS.
Which cars use CHAdeMO?
Mainly older models: Nissan Leaf (up to 2022), Nissan e-NV200, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and older Kia Soul EV. Newer Japanese-brand vehicles now use CCS.
Can I still find CHAdeMO chargers in Europe?
Yes, but numbers are declining. Many older fast chargers still have a CHAdeMO socket, but new installations rarely include it. Use the connector filter on the charging map to find available CHAdeMO stations near you.
